Companies like Meta (formerly Facebook) have envisioned an advanced future where we will live in virtual worlds through virtual/augmented reality devices. With the pandemic showing that working and even studying from home is possible, the idea that we can meet our fellow students or fellow students in a virtual world and “interact” with each other doesn’t seem too far fetched.
However, it seems that not all companies are necessarily keen on embracing the metaverse concept, and Apple is clearly one of them. According to Mark Gorman’s Power On newsletter, the journalist claims that Apple has apparently ruled out the possibility of creating its own metaverse.
The company has been rumored to be developing its own mixed reality device, so it’s only natural that some are wondering if Apple could go down the same path as the Meta. However, based on Gurman’s report, the notion is “taboo” and that Apple sees its mixed reality devices for use in short periods of connection, content viewing, and games, meaning they don’t expect us to “live” in them.
It remains to be seen whether or not Apple’s strategy will prevail over Meta’s as we are still in the cradle of technology and concept. It’s possible that Apple’s strategy will pay off in the short term, but in the long term, who knows, maybe the metaverse could actually become our new reality.
