Apple released Tracker Detection software to protect Android users from AirTags being stalked

Apple has released a new Android app designed to help those who don’t have an iOS device find out if someone is using AirTag or any other Find My compatible device to hack their location. When the program finds a nearby AirTag that has been separated from its owner, it will be flagged as an “Unknown AirTag”. If it then follows you for 10 minutes, you can use the app to tell the tracker to play a sound, making it easier to find. At this point, you can tap on the device with your NFC-compatible phone and you will receive instructions on how to remove its battery or disable it in any other way.

You don’t need an Apple account to use the app. As mentioned above, it can also detect Find My compatible trackers like. “AirTag offers industry-leading privacy and security features, and today we are expanding new capabilities to Android devices. Tracker Detect gives Android users the ability to search for AirTag or Find My-enabled trackers that may be traveling with them without their knowledge,” a spokesperson said. Apple for Engadget. “We are raising the bar for privacy for our users and the industry, and we hope others will follow suit.”

The release of Tracker Detect comes on the heels of multiple incidents of bad actors abusing AirTags to stalk people. In Canada, for example, police recently warned against thieves using . In June, Apple, in a separate effort to curb abuse, updated its trackers to play a sound between eight and 24 hours after they were separated from their owner, instead of the three days as was the case at launch.

How much Tracker Detect does to protect people depends on how many people download it. Unlike iOS, which sends proactive warnings when it detects false AirTags, this is an app that you need to install on your Android device. Its protections aren’t built into Android, at least not yet.
