Arturia offers a free lo-fi bar plug-in for the holidays

It has become something of a holiday tradition for Arturia to part with a free holiday plugin. Last year, I took a popular chorus recreation of Juno-6 and turned it into a stand-alone effect. This year, strip effects break from Mellotron emulation.

The original Mellotron is, of course, an iconic keyboard that plays tape loops from other machines – sort of like an initial sampler. Arturia caught that some artists were using the Mellotron V plugin in an unexpected way. They were uploading custom samples and instead of playing it as a keyboard melody, they simply added warmth and liveliness to the simulated bar loops.

So this holiday season, Arturia decided to cut out the medium and launch Tape Mello-Fi as a standalone tape simulator plugin. It can add distortion, saturation, tape flutter, and even some filtering. Its interface is simple and offers everything from a slight warmth to complete machine malfunctions. There are up to 25 presets included to get you started.

Of course there is tons One of the extras for lo-fi and tape simulators is there. But Arturia is especially good. And it’s free. So there’s really no reason not to grab it. And you should do it sooner rather than later. Tape Mello-Fi will be available as a free download from the Arturia website from December 21 through Friday, December 31. Then, well, who knows.
