Next morning: Hyundai may abandon the combustion engine

Welcome back to The Morning After. I hope you had a great weekend and are ready for 2021 to come and go. (I know I am.)

Today, we’ve rounded up the latest tech news from the past few days and several year-end articles on the biggest stories of the year. But first, Hyundai may abandon its new combustion engines.

The company has just built and just released its first electric car, but it’s apparently ready to move in quickly, leaving the old engines behind. Korea Economic Daily sources claim that Hyundai shut down the combustion engine design unit at its research center sometime this month. While there are still some workers left to improve the existing engines, the rest will move into the electric vehicle business.

Electrification is “an imperative,” new research chief Chung Kook Park reportedly said in an email, and the shift will help produce cars that “dominate the market in the future.” Park is probably right. In South Korea, the home of Hyundai, sales of only combustion cars will be banned by 2030.

The unveiling is now set for the spring of 2022.

Final Fantasy fans have been promised more information about the next installment of the role-playing series before the end of 2021. Unfortunately, this announcement and the game have been postponed. “When we last spoke, I promised I would get more information Final Fantasy XVI Later in 2021, producer Naoki Yoshida wrote on Twitter. “However, I regret to inform you that I will not be able to deliver on this promise, as complications from the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic have delayed game development for nearly half a year.”

Just don’t call it an apology.

The iPhone and Mac maker’s past year has been marked with little more than a course correction. In addition to moving ahead with the use of M1 PC chips in more powerful settings, Apple has eliminated the problematic keyboards found in the past few generations of MacBooks and improved battery life across the entire range of iPhone 13 models.

The biggest change – which we won’t see significant until next year – is the product overhaul. Apple will sell parts and instructions to customers who want to repair their iPhone on their own.

Puzzle Games

After nearly a year in business, Lego has revealed that the Sonic the Hedgehog Green Hill Zone set will be available online and in Lego stores on January 1, 2022 for $70. The game’s first and most famous brick recreation area includes minifigs for Sonic and Dr. Eggman (also known as Dr.Robotnik), two creatures, and Phantom Ruby. Unfortunately, Sonic won’t blast off in episodes, but there’s a technic lever to unlock him (or any other characters) along with episode add-ons, of course.

The move is happening as rumors persist about Apple AR headphones.

An apple

As rumors persist about its augmented reality headset, Apple has reportedly appointed Andrea Schubert as Meta’s head of public relations, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gorman. In his weekly newsletter. “Meta has been, with Oculus, the market leader in headphones, so such a lease makes sense as Apple approaches their launch,” Gorman wrote.

Schubert has served as Director of Communications for Meta Reality Labs and Head of Communications for Oculus with Meta since March 2016.

Apple’s potential AR headphones are already the subject of all kinds of rumours. Someone recently speculated that the headset might be dependent on another device such as an iPhone or a Mac computer. Or it could be a standalone device with dual 8K displays which can cost up to $3,000. A third rumor, from Gurman, indicated that she would be playing “high quality VR games”.

AMD and OnePlus both pulled their physical presence at the tech event. Although they did not provide detailed explanations, the move was an apparent response to the emergence of the COVID-19-specific Omicron variant, like many other companies that have already pulled out of CES.

AMD was already ready to launch its 2022 products with a livestream on January 4. OnePlus has said it will introduce the OnePlus 10 Pro in January, and it was rumored to unveil the phone at CES. For now, Samsung, Sony, and LG are still all set to show in Las Vegas in a couple of weeks. I take bets.
