Schlage could make a smart lock with Apple Home key support

Apple’s Wallet app lets you store things like membership cards, boarding passes, and more. However, with iOS 15, Apple started letting it store digital keys as well which you can use with hotels that support this feature.

However, if you’re not planning on staying in a hotel anytime soon but want the convenience of a digital key, Schlage may have something for you. According to a report from the HomeKit Authority, they discovered files with the FCC and a list on the HomeDepot website (which have since been removed) that point to the upcoming Schlage smart lock that will support Apple Home digital keys.

The device, according to the listing on HomeDepot, will apparently be known as Schlage Encode Plus. Assuming the list is accurate, this could be the first HomeKit-compatible smart lock available to consumers that will support the Apple Home key. While HomeKit-enabled smart locks aren’t new, Home Key support is.

Depending on the image, there will be multiple options for the user to open his door. There is a standard way using a physical key. There is also a number pad that allows you to enter a passcode, as well as support for numeric keys. Using digital keys is useful because it means that you can give someone access to your home even when you are away.

There’s no word on when the smart lock will be released, but with CES 2022 coming soon, we’ll probably learn more about it then.
