Xiaomi 12 Series phones are among the first to be powered by Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 . chipset


Unveiled the latest lineup of flagship smartphones and wearables. The Xiaomi 12 series, which is only available in China at the moment, includes two phone sizes: the Xiaomi 12 and the Xiaomi 12 Pro.

Both are among the first devices to run on the first generation Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 chipset and boast LPDDR5 RAM. The Xiaomi 12 has a 4,500mAh battery, while the 12 Pro has what the company claims is its first 120W 4,600mAh single-cell battery. Xiaomi says it offers a larger capacity of 400mAh compared to two-cell batteries without the need to bulk up.

The base model lineup includes the Sony IMX766 50MP as the main camera, a 13MP wide angle lens, and a 5MP remote sensor. Meanwhile, the 12 Pro has a new Sony IMX707 sensor, an ultra-wide camera with a 115-degree field of view and a 2x telephoto camera for photos. All three sensors are 50MP, while the main camera improves light capture by up to 49 percent over the previous model, according to Xiaomi.

On the front, each device has a 32-megapixel sensor. The front-facing camera is placed on the left, but this time in the middle, as is the case with the camera.

Xiaomi has noted that Night Mode is available on both devices, and both devices are said to have a camera that works well in low-light scenarios. The company says it is introducing a new imaging computing algorithm, which it claims improves capture speed and shutter lag.

The Xiaomi 12 has a 6.28-inch flexible OLED display with a resolution of 2,400 x 1,080, 1,100 nits and a 120Hz refresh rate. The 12 Pro offers a 6.73-inch AMOLED display with a resolution of 3200 x 1440 and 1500 nits. Xiaomi says the display uses micro-lens technology, which it claims improves “the viewing experience while increasing smart power-saving”. Both devices support HDR10+ and Dolby Vision.

On the audio side, both phones have symmetrical dual speakers and Dolby Atmos support. The 12 Pro features a mid-range speaker and a dedicated subwoofer.

The devices will go on sale on December 31, starting at 3,699 yuan (about $580) for the Xiaomi 12 and 4,699 yuan (about $738) for the Xiaomi 12 Pro. The company also said that it will launch a low-cost version of the Xiaomi 12 on the same day. The Xiaomi 12X has a Snapdragon 870 chipset and starts at CNY 3,199 ($500).

The phones will use MIUI 13, an operating system based on Android 12 that is also coming to the Mi 11 series phones, Xiaomi 11T, and other phones and. Xiaomi smartwatches, speakers, and TVs will also harness the operating system to help unite the ecosystem. A feature called Mi Smart Hub will allow users to share things like screen, music and apps with multiple nearby devices using a simple gesture.

In addition, Xiaomi has revealed its latest smartwatch. The Xiaomi Watch S1 has a 1.43 inch AMOLED display with a sapphire glass display and a stainless steel bezel. It will provide detailed health stats and support 117 fitness modes. The device has a 5ATM water resistance rating as well. Xiaomi says that the device has a battery life of up to 12 days and up to 24 days in standby mode.

Like the new phones, the Xiaomi Watch S1 will only be available in China for now. It starts at CNY 1,099 ($172).

Also new are the Xiaomi Buds 3, which have dual magnetic dynamic drivers. The earbuds provide up to 40dB noise-canceling and three active noise-canceling modes. Xiaomi says owners will get up to seven hours of playback on a single charge and up to 32 hours of total use with the charging case. Xiaomi Buds 3 cost 449 CNY ($70).
